IVAN METHUSELAH'S
DIGI-BOX RATION BOOK
RATION BOOK RULES & SCORING

1 - PREMISE

1.01   Each Saturday (see 5.08), Ivan Methuselah must select five freely viewable non-satellite television programmes from the forthcoming week's schedule.
1.02   He must also select three free-to-air non-satellite radio programmes from the forthcoming week's schedule.
1.03   And he should indicate or select the best three films of the forthcoming week's schedules on free-to-air Freeview-available channels. This should include a list of available scorable films (see 4.09).
1.04   The following week, Ivan must score everything he saw, and any film that qualifies for scoring (see various below).
2 - TELEVISION
2.01   News programming is no longer exempt.
2.02   Ivan cannot select two programmes that are on at the same time, unless a free to use, registration-free "view again" option exists online (ie. the BBC iPlayer). Likewise he cannot select a programme that is on at the same time as any of his radio or film selections.
2.03   Television programmes are scored out of 3. 1pt = quite good, 2pts = good, 3pts = special. 0pts are given to any programme Ivan sees which is less than quite good.
2.04   Ivan can score any programme he sees. If he has recommended something he has seen before (ie. a repeat) he can score that irrespective of whether he saw it in the week in question. If he did not recommend a programme he had seen before, and failed to watch it in the week in question, he cannot score that programme.
2.05   Ivan can choose to record a programme to be watched later in the year. Such items appear in brown at the bottom of the score-board. When he finally gets around to watching it, the programme's score is entered for the date it aired. If he fails to watch the programme within the year it is not counted.
2.06   All programme scores are logged alongside their channel and date of broadcast. If Ivan watches a repeat showing of a programme, that date (and not the date of the original broadcast) is the date that is logged.
2.07   The following abbreviations are commonly used by Ivan when referring to TV channels: B=BBC, BC= CBBC, BP= BBC Parliament, C=Channel, F4=Film4, 5L = Five Life, 5U = Five US, I=ITV, M4=More4, V=Virgin.
3 - RADIO
3.01   News programming is no longer exempt.
3.02   Ivan cannot select two programmes that are on at the same time, unless a free to use, registration-free "listen again" option exists online (ie. the BBC iPlayer). Likewise he cannot select a programme that is on at the same time as any of his TV or film selections.
3.03   Radio programmes
are scored out of 3. 1pt = quite good, 2pts = good, 3pts = special. 0pts are given to any programme Ivan sees which is less than quite good.
3.04   Ivan can score any programme he hears.
If he has recommended something he has heard before (ie. a repeat) he can score that irrespective of whether he saw it in the week in question. If he did not recommend a programme he had heard before, and failed to listen to it in the week in question, he cannot score that programme.
3.05   Ivan can choose to record a programme to be listened to later in the year. Such items appear in brown at the bottom of the score-board. When he finally gets around to hearing it, the programme's score is entered for the date it aired. If he fails to listen to the programme within the year it is not counted.
3.06   All programme scores are logged alongside their channel and date of broadcast. If Ivan hears a repeat showing of a programme, that date (and not the date of the original broadcast) is the date that is logged.
3.07   The following abbreviations are commonly used by Ivan when referring to Radio stations: R = (BBC) Radio, SE = BBC Radio Five Live Sports Extra, 4L = BBC Radio 4 LW.
4 - FILM
4.01   Films are scored out of 3pts, unless Ivan watches them in which case they're scored out of 5pts. 1pt (broadcast) / 3pts (watched) = good (Ivan has about 100 of these), 2pts/4pts = very good (about 50), and 3pts/5pts = true greatness (about 25).
4.02   A specific 3pt/5pt film may only be selected and scored for one week of a calendar month. So if a 3pt film gets four showings in March, only 3pts register on the scorecard, plotted against the film's first showing.
4.03   A specific 2pt/4pt film can only be selected and scored for one week in any two adjacent calendar months. So if a 2pt film is shown in March, it cannot score again until May.
4.04   A specific 1pt/3pt film can only be selected and scored for one week in any three adjacent calendar months.
4.05   Ivan can score a film, irrespective of whether he watches it that week, provided it is scorable within the confines of rules 4.02-4.04.
4.06   Ivan must provide a list of all scorable films for a given week (given the confines of rules 4.02-4.04), and may also give details of films that are not scorable. Where possible, Ivan should highlight three films for viewing each week, and these films must not clash with each other or with Ivan's TV or radio selections.
4.07   Ivan can choose to record a film to be watched later in the year.
Such items appear in brown at the bottom of the score-board. When he finally gets around to watching it, the film's score is entered for the date it aired. If he fails to watch the film within the year it is not counted.
4.08
All film scores are logged alongside their channel and date of broadcast. All showings of a film during the month are given on the scoreboard.
5 - ONLINE PROGRAMMING
5.01   From 2010, Ivan can score programmes watched or heard on-line.
5.02
Programmes are scored out of 3. 1pt = quite good, 2pts = good, 3pts = special. 0pts are given to any programme Ivan sees which is less than quite good.
5.03   All programme scores are logged alongside their site and date of viewing (or publication where programming is of recent broadcast).
5.04   The following abbreviations are commonly used by Ivan when referring to online broadcasters: BA = BBC Archive, BD = BBC downloadable podcast, iP = BBC iPlayer, YT = YouTube.

6 - REVIEWS & SCORING
6.01   Every week, Ivan should provide reviews for a selection of programming he has seen or heard.
6.02   He must keep a tally of each month's TV, radio and film scores.
6.03   He must keep a table of each channel's performance month on month.
6.04   Every three months, Ivan must conduct a quarterly review, analysing each network's performance in satisfying Ivan's tastes.
6.05   At the end of the year, Ivan must present a thorough analysis of the year's broadcasting.
6.06   Ivan must also provide an in-depth selection of programming for the three weeks surrounding Christmas in the form of his annual Christmas Box.
6.07   Ivan may choose to present any number of reports or essays throughout the year.
6.08   Ivan must publish his reviews and selections on or before the Saturday that begins the selected week. He is allowed two breaks from selection and review: a few weeks at the start of the year and a few weeks around the start of July. He must, however, maintain the scorecard through these weeks.
6.09   Ivan reserves the right to swear at things he doesn't like, and to habitually underscore as the mood takes him.
