=CONCLUSION=
April - June 2005
| Ivan scored the best programmes
as "Keepers & Classics" (3pts), "Jolly Good" (2pts) and "Pretty Good"
(1pt), with a running total of each per week. Anything considered "Missable"
or lower was not scored. The results are divided into TV, Radio and Film,
with the red figure being the sum.
Ivan also calculated the best performing channels of the week. TV channels have a deliberate points advantage. B = BBC, R = BBC Radio, C = Channel, I = ITV. |

| The average weekly tally was
25;
that's 5pts more than the run up to Easter. TV got 18,
which is 4 more than last time. Radio took 2,
which is only half the score of before Easter. This is the result of the
great Quote...Unquote drought, I'm afraid. As for film, it managed
5pts,
which is a new record for the Ration Book. A mini-season of Wilder films
helped, and had I got round to watching my tapes from B4's Iranian season,
the score may well have been even higher.
The best result was in Week 3, when we had a General Election, B4 showed the Wallace & Grommit films and I1 had the Billy Wilder seasonette. There was also some snooker and a Dalek. Week 8 was the worst, mainly through a lack of decent films. As ever, telly got its best result in Week 1. This time, this was down to snooker, poker, pre-election interviews and the various works of Russel T Davis (Who and Casanova). Radio only came to life with the arrival of the News Quiz and ISIHAC, and was helped by Mahler to hit 7pts in the final week. In all, TV (and film) were up on pre-Easter, while Radio was down. Here then are the channel totals (last season's placing, and points difference in brackets): There were four fallers, points-wise. Of those, only two were really significant: R4's comedy drought lost it 2pts worth per week, while B2 fell by 1pt per week (which isn't that dramatic really). The biggest improvers were C5 and B1, thanks to two series of Poker and Doctor Who respectively. Other moderately significant improvers were ITV3 (Hammer House of Horror), BBCi (Snooker; Glastonbury), and ITV1 (films). ITV3 continues its march up the chart, as predicted in the New Year. R5 is the best radio station, despite its poor showing (serial news and current affairs is exempt), with Kermode's film reviews being so good that you can now download them off the net in umpteen different ways (well at least three). C4's drop in the pecking order should be cause for concern, especially as it was at the hand of C5. It's best showing was in Week 2, and that was only three 1-pointers. It needs to take a good long hard look at itself. Speaking of C4, Richard Whitely is dead. It's not as wrong as John Peel (not even close), but it's still wrong all the same. He will be missed by all but the ferrets. While I'm away, I recommend you stick with Heimat. That's the only series at the moment that is really worthy of attention, as far as I can see. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you then. |
