THE SPORTS HALL

The Sports Hall is the last outpost before the library building (now PE classrooms). It was built in the '70s, or perhaps the very early '80s. The main body of the hall is timber-clad, with brick-built changing rooms, stores and office-space to the south.

The girls' changing rooms are to the west of the brick-built block, and the boys' to the east; although in the late '90s, the set-up was changed such that boys got changed in the Sports Hall and girls got changed in the New Gym. The reasons for this remain unclear. Maybe there was a hole in a wall somewhere. The Sports Hall itself is large, equipped with netting and basketball hoops, and is mostly used for badminton and the (evil) Bleep Test. For the uninitiated, the (evil) Bleep Test is the PE department's most cherished form of torture. Get EVERYONE to run up and down the room until they collapse in a half-dead heap. It is a stamina test, and its merits as a fitness evaluation are questionable. But it's a good laugh for Mr and Mrs Woodhouse, and that's what counts.

The Sports Hall was sometimes commandeered for exam purposes. Similarly, the Main Hall was sometimes commandeered for Movement purposes.

The western changing rooms once saw one of the scariest moments in human history, when a large spider evacuated the (broken) air-filled sole of a pair of trainers. The owner of the trainers was a little distressed, having only just taken them off.
