| The ANGELS of DEATH | |
Formed:
Carmarthen,
Wales, 1980 by JOHN CRAVEN, as a backing band
for a tour. In addition to Craven-duties, they had a solo career and became
moderately successful in the late 80s. Style:
Angry New Wave outfit
with the acid tongue of PETRA CORREN mainly at the helm. The band shook
off the Newsround baggage in 1992 when they changed their name to CYFEB.
This new incarnation was not much different to before, but in Welsh, and
more political. Cyfeb rested while Petra started a family, before reforming
as DIWYDIANFA. This third coming combined the previous
sound with tape effects and hip-hop elements. PETRA AND
POLAWSKI on the other hand were moody (and at times slightly scary)
early 80s electronica.
Songwriters:
all group penned. Trivia:
Sleevenote from their1991 LP: "The following DJs will NOT be terminated:
John Peel."
Recommended: We Eat Pandas (*6), Ten DJs We Want Dead (*5), Ysig (*5), Cancr (*5) STEVE HILLAGE (ex-GONG, ex-JOHN CRAVEN)- guitar, vocals / NOEL EDMONDS (aka CARL WHITTINGTON) - keyboards / MAGGIE PHILBIN (aka PETRA CORREN)(ex-DIRYWIO) - bass, vocals / KEITH CHEGWIN (aka DEWI NEWBOLD) (ex-DIRYWIO) -drums This line-up acted as the backing group for JOHN CRAVEN on the 1981 album DEATH OF THE CRAVEN ANGEL. HILLAGE left after the album and was replaced for live duties by WARREN SMITH (ex-THE SEED) -guitars, vocals, who joined full time in 1982 under the psuedonym POSHPAWS. In 1983, CORREN has a side project: |

| The group part company with Clustcwyr following the ACNC buy-out. They maintain a physical presence in the valleys, but Corren also begins to pursue a political career on the side. The whole group are involved in local activism campaigns, and eschew the recorded media. |
